The Department of Forestry is funded and operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its mission is to protect forest lands from fire, insects, and disease. It is responsible for managing state lands for timber, recreation, water, research, wildlife, and biodiversity. It provides professional forestry advice and technical management programs to non-industrial private forest landowners.

Burning Laws
From February 15 to May 1, burning within 300 feet of woodland or within 300 feet of a flammable material adjoining woodland is prohibited between midnight and 4:00 p.m. The allowed outdoor burning period during these dates is 4:00 p.m. to midnight only.

Windrow burning is allowed to proceed into the next day, provided it is not re-stoked until the permitted 4:00 p.m. to midnight burning period.

Should you have any questions about any burning laws, please call the Forestry Department.
