The mission of the Department of Social Services is to aid citizens in meeting their fundamental needs during times of temporary economic and social crisis, to protect our children and vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect, to administer a range of services to help maintain families in the least restrictive and intrusive manner possible, and to assist in preparing citizens to find and retain employment.

The Department of Social Services provides a wide array of services to the citizens of Nottoway County. These services include a network of protective, supportive, and temporary financial services that assist citizens with achieving a realistic and attainable level of self-sufficiency.

These services include:

Benefit Programs – These help eligible families and individuals meet basic needs, shelter and medical care through such programs as Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Food Stamps, Medicaid, Auxiliary Grants, State-Local Hospitalization, and Fuel Assistance.

Service Programs – These programs provide protective, preventative, and supportive services to families and individuals through such programs as Child and Adult Protective Services, Foster Care and Adoptions, Prevention Services, Foster and Adoptive Home Recruitment, as well as limited financial help to prevent eviction, utility cutoffs, etc.

Employment Services – The Department of Social Services provides assistance to eligible individuals in retaining, regaining or securing employment with financial assistance to eliminate barriers to employment such as child care, transportation, tools, uniforms, etc.

The Department of Social Services is guided by the Nottoway County Social Services Board, whose members are appointed for four-year terms by the Nottoway County Board of Supervisors. The Social Services Board depends on the Director of Social Services to oversee and manage the activities of the Department of Social Services. The department employs approximately 20 persons to oversee their programs.
